Cartoonist NW win!

Two years ago I mentioned that I had been thinking about "blogging-up" my ideas behind deeply emotional politics, I was not incendiary enough to unload ALL of my politics but I was toying with the idea of letting some of my ideas filter out.

Partly as a result of Milt Prigee making a big impression on me this month, and partly as a result of the discovery that people were able to "get" my do-it-yourself-Editorial Cartoon concept, I am going to let more out of the bag.

Do-it-yourself-Editorial Cartoons allow you to "cut out" the Editorial that you disagree with and keep the Editorial comment that you want. This technique may result in dramatic Editorial Cartoons that do not generate lawsuits. This would make a low-budget cartoonist lifestyle possible.

The idea here is also to generate understanding between people of incompatible political views.

This is NOT an Editorial Cartoonist

Milt Priggee used to be an Editorial Cartoonist. By his definition, an Editorial Cartoonist is a human employed by a Local Paper for the Editorial Page of that Local Paper. (caution - Milt includes some of his banned cartoons at his site - not everything is 3rd grader appropriate that you find at www.miltpriggee.com - not the normal NSFW, but NSFW because... "wow, that was edgy")
M. Priggee was the guest speaker last month for Cartoonists Northwest, as you can see by the caricature of this smiling person (see image) it was the best kind of a cartoonist presentation.
M. Priggee not an Editorial Cartoonist. There are only 10 remaining for the entire US. You can see Editorial Cartoons here (leftish) and here (rightish), so you might think that everything is fine. It is not.
"This little Priggee" * is not currently working in his chosen profession. However he is (almost certainly) "the MOST SUED Editorial Cartoonist evaarrr". Who would have thought that you could be sued for a cartoon expressing an opinion about lawyers? (normally a free citizen living in a dictator-free country cannot be sued for having an opinion, but, if you have artistic ability, a significant number of lawyers are pretty sure that you can be sued)
I will proudly hang on to (and frame soon) my prized caricature, made by "Mr. 12.2 million". Thank you Mr. Priggee.

Jeff Hawley is Jeff Hamil

This week only.
Jeff Hawley is Jeff Hamill. Jeff Hamill is the correct name for the Jeff who wrote the gag for "Wasp Bait", the single-panel-adventure-winner of the Cartoonist-of-the-Month recognition for the Cartoonists Northwest cartoon club. Congratulations Jeff, and condolences to the other Jeff for not being Jeff Hamill. I may post a version of the cartoon with the correct name at some later date.

I will say more nice things about Jeff Hawley next week. Things that will swing the pendulum back into the "true" direction.

quick recap of the Emerald City Comicon

Erik Thompson who has a style that I love - sat across from me all weekend, sometimes making faces and sometimes giving me some good ideas on process. A good man.
Bruce Timm who saved Batman from obscurity in the 1990s - sat just a few feet away from the CNW booth both days
Stephen Silver is the great character designer who sat next to me, his booth was partially obscured by the huge line that was there to see Bruce Timm, so I was able to talk to him more than I would have otherwise. He is a great person as well as a great character designer, very dedicated to being a dad, I was a fan before the comicon and a bigger one after having him to myself at the comicon.
There was a crowd of people from the cartoon club (Cartoonist Northwest) there (many with their own booths) and I promoted the club with Donna, Elizabeth and Roberta.
His crowd was too large for me to talk to him, but at least I was able to see what Humberto Ramos looked like. I rabidly consume his early work with "Impulse".
Have to mention my other favorites Phil Foglio and Aaron Williams who were there and I have linked to for over a year at Girl Genius and Nodwick. Greatness in stories.

Emerald City Comicon

Busy week ahead.
WIL WHEATON has been added, as has ADAM BALDWIN, to the Emerald City Comicon. I have tickets to the early show for Iron Man and Aomic Robo has a free comic coming out. Cartoonist Northwest will be well represented as well. Good times.

I am a winner!

My “Sunburned Pirate” entry won for the sculpture-before-dinner activity (probably because of the salad leaf that was added to simulate seaweed?- Hat tip to Jeff Hammill and my table.)
The Toonie Awards banquet was great as usual – the best so far by my thinking. Some greats were missed – Scott, and Scott and Georgia and… plenty of other people that you cannot help but like.
I have met many talented, fine toonists over my almost 2 years of participation.
If I ever do a project with Dillon Works this recognition could come in handy.

Mark Monlux (who normally takes top sculpting honor) successfully challenged me to contribute to his Stickman webcomic – look for an entry later this week?
The Cartoonists Northwest club is going through some changes. I hope that we do not lose the old website, but I like the “yahoo groups” idea. The new ties with the Art Institute of Seattle (a CNW show is in progress since Friday) have been welcome, and more people are recognizing what a uniquely great thing CNW (Cartoonists Northwest) is. (It looks like Philadelphia has something going, but too few cities seem to have what Seattle has.)
